Whooping Cough Support

Here in Michigan, we have recently been experiencing a rise in cases of Pertussis or Whooping Cough, with a current total of 37 confirmed cases, mostly in school-aged children. When it comes to the spread of an illness such as whooping-cough, tensions can run high for parents. Many times, it turns into the blame game between vaccinated and unvaccinated families. (The cases here are close to 50/50 between vaccinated and unvaccinated (or not up to date on the vaccine), although that number fluctuates as new cases come forth. Many states have seen outbreaks where a majority of the children were vaccinated.) In my research of whooping-cough, it’s evident that most of the fear surrounding this illness comes from the fact that modern medicine is limited in its means to treat it and therefore relies almost solely on a vaccine and antibiotics. When those fail, fear ensues.

While whooping-cough can be alarming in babies, it doesn’t have to be a scary event when you know how to care for yourself and your family. Whether you are vaccinated or not vaccinated against this ailment, there are effective ways to lessen whooping-cough symptoms and to shorten the length of the illness should you or your family come down with it.

Below is a list of the most effective Homeopathic remedies and other valuable therapies to use should a case of whooping-cough affect you or someone you know. When choosing a Homeopathic remedy, choose the one that most closely matches as many of the symptoms as possible. If you are uncertain which remedy to use, contact a Certified Homeopathic Practitioner.

Drocera: This is the first remedy to consider in cases of whooping-cough. The coughing fits can be lengthy and severe, making it difficult to catch ones breath. The cough is generally worse after midnight and worse upon lying down. The cough may cause vomiting and can be painful. There may be a tickling or dryness in the throat, which can cause fits of coughing. The cough is generally not productive and the coughing fits can get worse in trying to reach the phlegm. This cough may cause nose bleeds.

Antimonium Tartaricum: This remedy is indicated when breathing and coughing is accompanied by loud rattling in the chest due to the mucus. While coughing it will sound as if there is an overwhelming amount of mucus but none will be produced from the cough. In addition, if this remedy is indicated, there will mostly likely be a great weakness and sleepiness present. It may seem as if the person needing this remedy is too weak to cough up the mucus.

Bryonia: This cough will be dry, hard and very painful. There may be a feeling that you must hold your chest in order to cough hard enough to get the phlegm to move up. The cough becomes worse during any movement and can be worse from eating and upon entering a warm room. The person who needs this remedy may continually want to be left alone and to lie perfectly still.

Causticum: This cough will get deeper and deeper as it persists to try to reach the mucus. The cough will be worse from cold drinks but will be better with bending over/forward. The cough may be hard and racking, with a raw feeling in the chest.

Coccus Cacti: This remedy is indicated when the cough produces a thick, clear, ropy mucus. Many times, because of this mucus, the cough with end in vomiting. The mucus may come out of the nose, as well as the chest. Drinking a cold glass of water or breathing in cold air may temporarily relieve the cough and the tickling that may be present in the throat. This cough is generally worse in a warm room.

Cuprum Metallicum: The cough that would indicate this remedy is very similar to the cough of Drocera except in this remedy you will see cramping of muscles, clenched fists and/or convulsions associated with the cough. There may be sudden coughing attacks that lead to near-suffocation. There may be blueness in the face, fingers or toes. The cough is generally worse in the middle of the night (around 3am) and if emotions run high (such as the child getting upset).

Ipecacuanha: This remedy is used mainly for children in situations of cough and is indicated when there is persistent nausea present that is not relieved by vomiting that follows the cough. This remedy should also be considered if the child becomes very stiff and rigid with the cough. The cough may rattle and can be worse when entering a warm room.

Spongia: The cough that will benefit from this remedy will be dry, tickling, constricting and painful (both in the chest and in the throat). The cough may be worse from talking and swallowing and can be characterized as a cough that sounds like a seal barking. It is generally worse before midnight and with cold drinks and may be temporarily alleviated by eating.

In addition to Homeopathy, there are other things you can do to lessen the symptoms and shorten the length of the illness.

Vitamin C: One of the most important things you can do is up your daily intake of vitamin C. Dosage depends on size/age. If you are unsure, contact your medical provider. Always consult your provider before administering vitamins to infants or young children.

Thyme Essential Oil: Put a few drops into a warm bath, diffuser or humidifier. The Thyme can help kill bacteria and the warm steam, in combination, can help loosen mucus and give relief from the cough. Other effective oils include: Eucalyptus, Rosemary, R.C., Marjoram and Pine.

Chest or Back Massage: You can mix a couple of drops of one of the oils listed above to a little olive oil for a chest or back massage.

Herbal and/or Ginger Tea: Unless your cough is one that is worse when you drink something warm, a nice warm glass of tea can be a relief. Choose your favorite and add fresh ginger for an immune boost and for help to excrete toxins (ginger can help you to “sweat it out”). Sweeten with honey if desired. Mullein is also a nice addition to your herbal tea. It is a natural expectorant and in many times, can be found right in your back yard.

Thieves Oil: This is an oil blend available at Young Living and it’s one of our favorites. When sick (with any cold, virus or bacterial infection) rub Thieves oils directly on the bottoms of both feet about an hour before bed. Put on a pair of very warm socks (double up if necessary, you want your feet to sweat while you sleep). Your body will absorb the oils and then when your feet begin to sweat during the night you will excrete some of the toxins that have built up during the illness. This has always worked wonders for our family in lessening the symptoms and shortening the length of almost every illness.

Light, Easy Meals: Soups and broths are the best. If your cough is worse from drinking or eating warm foods/liquids try a variety of juices. It is important to stay away from dairy as it can increase the amount of mucus.

Rest, Rest, Rest: While sleep will be interrupted with coughing, it is important to rest as much as possible when you can. Prop yourself or your child up with a few pillows if lying down aggravates the cough.

While whooping-cough can put anyone in an undesirable situation, there are things you can do to help you and your family during this bout of illness.

Homeopathy and Summertime Rashes

We live in Northern Michigan and spend much of our summer on the beaches of Lake Michigan.  Some of our favorite beaches have poison ivy lining the trails.  Although we have learned to avoid it (my oldest daughter is very susceptible), we still keep remedies on hand if a rash develops and avoid using any cortisone creams or other medications.  In addition to poison ivy, Homeopathy is very effective with poison oak, poison sumac, hives, allergic reactions on the skin and more.

Below are some of the most commonly used remedies for rashes.  As when using Homeopathy for other ailments, choose the remedy that most closely resembles the symptoms you are experiencing for the greatest and most rapid result.

Anacardium:  This remedy is generally most effective with rashes that come from poison Oak.  There will be great itching and swelling.  Fluid-filled blisters may also be present.  The itching will be worse with heat or if hot water is applied.

Apis:  This is the first remedy we think of when hives are present.  Rash or hives will be red and swollen.  They may or may not itch, but there is usually a burning or a stinging pain.  The discomfort of the rash is relieved by a cold compress.  My youngest daughter will develop hives if she accidentally consumes a tree nut.  This remedy has been our lifesaver.  In addition, this remedy is made from the honey bee, which also makes it a wonderful remedy for bee, wasp or yellow jacket stings.

Belladonna:  This is generally not the first remedy I reach for when it comes to rashes, however if the rash comes on very fast and is very hot with a throbbing pain, I would consider this remedy.  A fever may also be present.

Bryonia:  A Bryonia rash would be hot, dry and lumpy.  The discomfort would be worse from movement, pressure and touch.  Someone requiring this remedy may want to lie completely still and not move.

Graphites:  This remedy is indicated when the rash is oozing with a thick, sticky, golden fluid that eventually becomes hardened and crusty.  The itch will be worse at night.

Ledum:  This is the first remedy I think of for bug bites, especially if a person is sensitive to mosquito bites and ends up with large welts around the sting site.  Like this bug bite reaction, the rash will be very swollen and puffy.  It will also be relieved by cold applications.

Natrum Muraticum:  This remedy is usually considered for more chronic rashes, however, if a rash develops that is worse from the sun and from physical excursion, this may be a remedy to consider.  The rash itself will be dry and flaky.  Many rashes requiring this remedy will occur around the hair-line or at the bends of the knees or elbows.

Rhus Tox:  This is the first remedy to consider in cases of poison ivy, as it is made from this very plant.  The rash may burn and will itch intensely.  The rash will feel better with heat or by running the rash under hot water.  In some cases the heat will make the itch worse while it is applied but, once removed, the itching will cease.  In some instances, those with a rash requiring Rhus Tox will becoming very restless and will not be able to sit still.

Sepia:  A rash requiring this remedy will be very dry and scaly with a red or brownish tint.  Getting too warm under the covers or under clothing will make the itching of this rash worse, as will sweating.

Sulphur:  A rash needing sulphur will be red, irritated, burning and itchy.  Heat will aggravate it, as will washing.  This is the first remedy to think of for rashes caused by clothing irritation, especially if the rash develops from wool.  Itching will be almost unbearable but will make the rash worse and can cause it to spread.  The rash itself can be either dry and scaly or moist and weepy.

Urtica Urens:  This is the first remedy to consider when faced with a rash that resembles a nettle rash (It is made from the stinging nettle plant).  The eruptions will sting and burn greatly.  Scratching will make the rash worse, as will applying a cold compress or cold water.  If a rash develops during heat stroke or overheating, this is also a remedy to consider.

The potency to use for the rashes listed above range from 6C – 30C.  I generally go with 30C unless I don’t have any on hand.  Each remedy can be taken 3 – 6 times per day, depending on the need.  As a general rule, the remedy can be taken every one – two hours.  If no improvement is seen after a couple of doses, another remedy may be needed.  For more immediate cases, such as the times when my daughter has accidentally eaten a tree nut and the reaction is more imminent, I will increase the time frame to every 15 minutes until an improvement is seen.  Choosing the right potency and frequency can be tricky.  If you ever have any questions or concerns about which remedy, potency or frequency to use, consult a certified homeopath.

If the rash is due to a severe allergic reaction seek emergency medical attention.

A Simple Shift of Thought

[tweetmeme]Have you ever had a bad day? Monday, for me, was one of those of days. I woke up in a foul mood, I found out my health insurance rates were going up, my brother was angry about a few things and was sending me not-so-pleasant text messages throughout the day and I lost my debt card. It was one of those days that was just one thing after the other. Nothing went smoothly.

That evening my partner called to say goodnight and asked an interesting question. He said, “how is it that your bad days are so much better than my bad days”? This is a great question!

It all has to do with a simple shift of thought.

What is it about a bad day that makes it “bad”. Using an example from my Monday, is it really a bad thing to lose your debt card? All it really meant for me, in my case, was a phone call to the bank and a nice conversation with the owner of the store I left it in when she found it the next day. Is that so bad? It all has to do with what I tell myself about what happened. I could tell myself that it’s aweful to have lost my debt card and that now I have to take time out of my busy day to call the bank, cancel my card and get a new one. It’s such a hassel!!! Or, I just tell myself that I need a new card, I had a nice conversation with the woman at the bank and a nice conversation with the owner of the store. No judgement – good or bad. It’s just what happened. If I struggle with what happened, if I struggle against reality, then I will suffer. If I accept it as what happened, with no judgement – good or bad – I don’t suffer. It’s as simple as that.

The same is true for when we find ourselves in a foul mood. That morning when I woke up and was feeling grumpy and aggitated I could have fought against that mood and told myself that “this mood is bad” and “I need to get rid of it as soon as possible” but I didn’t. Instead I observed my mood, noticed it was on the foul side and accepted it. In fact, I enjoyed it. I didn’t fight against it. I didn’t try and push it away. I enjoyed the energy as it was. Would I generally prefer to be in a happy mood, of course, but I am human. Emotions and moods are going to come and go. Why not enjoy them all instead of labeling certain emotions “good” and others “bad”. It felt good on Monday to allow myself to be in a bad mood. I didn’t fight it. I let it be, knowing it wouldn’t last and enjoying it while it was there. Had I tried to push my foul mood away it would have only made me suffer.

This is what my partner was noticing. I accepted the reality of my day and my mood as they were. I didn’t fight them and I didn’t expect anything to be different than it was. That is why my “bad” day looked better than any “bad” day he had ever had.

Next time you find yourself in a foul mood or having a “bad” day try a simple shift of thought and see how it turns out.

*****************************************************************

Ultimately, it’s how you view your moods and your day that makes the difference but if a shift in thought is not something for you (or even if it is) the Homeopath in me feels pulled to recommend a few remedies for irritability and aggitation. They will not, however, stop any of the day’s events – “good” or “bad”.

Chamomile – Irritability with anger.

Pulsatilla – Irritability with sadness and/or weeping. Changeable moods.

Nux Vomica – Irritability with impatience and intollerance of others.

Sepia – Irritability with a feeling of being overworked. May feel hopeless. Sarcastic.

Ignatia – Irritability from grief or loss. Mood swings.

Calc Phos – Irritability and mood swings caused by stress and the “pressures” of life. Fatigue.

But That Is Poisonous Isn’t It?

One of the common questions people have about Homeopathy has to do with the remedies that are made from substances that are poisonous in their original state.  Some examples of these remedies include mercury (Mercurius), deadly nightshade (Belladonna), foxglove (Digitalis) and Cobra venom (Naja).  In their original state all of them are poisonous yet all of them can be taken safely when taken Homeopathically.  How?  The answer is that there are no molecules of the original substance left in the Homeopathic remedy beyond the potency of 12C.  Remedies below a 12C have a few molecules in them, however they are so diluted that the molecules render no harm.

Here is how remedies in the C potency are created:

To produce a 1c potency of a remedy, for example, one drop of the mother tincture is added to 99 drops of an alcohol/water mixture and succussed (shaken by hitting the bottle on the palm of your hand from about 1 foot). To produce a 2c potency, one drop of the 1c mixture is added to 99 drops of an alcohol/water mixture and succussed. The number of a homeopathic remedy shows how many times it has been diluted and succussed, for example, a 30c has been diluted and succussed 30 times.

In general, most people use a potency higher than a 12C, 30C being the most commonly used potency for home prescribing and acute conditions.  Times when remedies are used in the lower potencies, such as 6c, are times when we are looking for more of an effect on tissue, such as teeth (cavity prevention), bones (osteoporosis), nails (strengthening) etc. Scheussler’s Tissue Salts are designed specifically for this use.

The next question that usually follows this is, “If there are no molecules left then how does Homeopathy work”?  This is the question that has eluded scientists for over 200 years and is one of the biggest weapons used against Homeopathy today.  The answer, however, is simple.  Even though the molecules are no longer present in higher potencies the “memory” of the molecules remain.  The energy of the remedy remains.  When we match the energy of a remedy to the overall energy of a person it results in rapid, gentle and lasting cure.  Sound unbelievable?  It may, but only to those who have never seen Homeopathy work wonders on everything from colds to depression.

Luckily, for the Homeopathic community, science is finally catching up with why and how Homeopathy works.  New studies are currently being completed that prove that water can retain a “memory” of substances that were once dissolved in it.  With these findings we will finally have scientific proof of something that Homeopaths have known for 200 years.  Homeopathy works.

Urinary Tract Infections and Other Urinary Issues

There are many people who have suffered from urinary tract infections and/or issues at least once in their lives.  For many the ailment can be a recurring event.  It is not always necessary to run straight to the antibiotics.  In fact, it is better for your immune system if it is given the chance to fight off the infection on its own.  Homeopathy is a wonderful and effective option for urinary tract infections.  Homeopathy works with your immune system to fight off the infection.  Below are the most common remedies for this affliction.

Aconite: This remedy is effective if taken at the very beginning stages of an infection.  If you do not catch the infection soon enough, however, this remedy will not work.

Apis: This remedy is indicated if there is scalding pain during urination.  There may also be some sediment in the urine.

Benzoic Acid: There will be an offensive odor to the urine if this remedy is indicated.  The urine will be very strong and concentrated.  It may also be brownish in color with some sediment.  Benzoic Acid is also of the main remedies for kidney stones.

Berberis: This is another kidney stone remedy.  There will be pain with the stones.  The pain will be sharp and will radiate outward or downward.  It is also a remedy that is indicated for cystitis that has cutting and burning pain.  The pain tends to extend to the urethra.  The pain and urge to urinate is worse with motion and walking.  The pain may also be worse after urination or when not urinating.  The pain is usually relieved somewhat during urination.

Borax: The pain, when Borax is needed, will be greatest when retaining urine.  If it is a child that has the infection he/she may scream out before urination in anticipation of the pain.

Cannabis Indica: This remedy is indicated if there is great burning pain only during urination.

Cannabis Stativa: If this remedy is needed there will be burning pain during or at the end of urination.  The pain is focused around the urethra and there may be discharge.

Cantharis: This is the most widely used remedy for urinary tract infections.  There will be great burning pain before urination that will intensify during urination.  Each drop of urine feels like scalding water.  There may be involuntary urination and/or dribbling after urination.

Chimaphila: Retention of urine will be present with this remedy.  Someone who needs this will need to press long before the urine flows.  This remedy is also indicated for an enlarged prostate.

Equisetum: This remedy is indicated when there is more urging to urinate when the bladder is nearly empty than there is when it is full.  There may be pain or fullness in the bladder even after urination.  There is frequent urging with a lot of urine.  The pain is generally worse at the end of urination.

Hydrophobinum: If there is an urge for urination every time one hears the sound of running water then this is a remedy to consider.  Pain is generally during urination.

Medorrhinum: This remedy is specifically for chronic cystitis that comes on after the start of a new sexual relationship.

Mercurius: If cystitis is present with a strong urge to urinate and the urge is not relieved by urination then consider this remedy.  The pain is burning in nature.

Nux Vomica: There will be a constant urge for small amounts of urine if this remedy is indicated.  There is pain upon retention of urine.  The pain will be better with heat and/or warm bathing.

Pareira: This remedy is indicated for the retention of urine with an enlarged prostate.  There will be painful urging, dribbling and/or involuntary urination.  There may be pain in the bladder that extends down the legs.

Pulsatilla: The pain with Pulsatilla will be at the end of urination and will be worse when trying to retain urine.  There may also be involuntary urination.

Sarsparilla: This remedy will always have pain at the end of urination.  The pain itself is usually burning in nature.  There is frequent urging and one may not be able to urinate without standing up.  There may also be red sediment in the urine.

Staphysagria: This remedy is specifically indicated when cystitis occurs after one’s very first experience with intercourse.  There may be frequent urging.

Terebinthina: The urine will contain blood if this remedy is indicated.  The urine may also be smokey colored and smell of violets.  There may also be burning pain around the kidneys.

In addition to the remedies listed above D-Mannose can be taken.  It works the same way as cranberry juice but comes in a powder and can be added to any non-citrus drink.  It will help to keep your urinary tract flushed out.

If you have a urinary tract infection and the symptoms do not improve within 48 hours see your Physician.  While it is good to avoid antibiotics whenever possible they do play their part if an infection fails to clear on its own.  If you are unsure of which remedy is indicated contact a Certified Homeopath for assistance.

We do not diagnose or treat disease.  The information provided herein is for educational purposes only.  If you require a diagnoses please consult a licensed medical doctor.

Apis – That Wonderful Honeybee

Apis is a wonderfully versatile remedy that belongs in everyone’s home remedy kit.  Just about everyone knows the effects of a bee sting  – stinging pain, burning, swelling and redness with possible heat radiating from the sting site.  These are the main symptoms of this remedy, wherever they are located, even if not caused by a bee sting.  There is also the widely used saying “busy as a bee”.  This is included in this remedy as well.  One who needs this remedy is usually someone who is always busy; someone who always has to be doing something and cannot sit still.  In addition,  someone needing this may also be someone who is very task oriented and may be a workaholic.  It should also be mentioned that Apis, in Homeopathic form, is safe even for those who are allergic to bee stings.

Here are some of the ways that Apis can be used:

Bee stings: The sting will have the typical symptoms of swelling, redness, stinging or burning pain and will feel better when a cold compress is applied.

Other bug bites or stings: Bites from spiders, wasps, yellow jackets and other insects, if the typical bee sting symptoms are present, can also be alleviated with Apis.  It is also a helpful remedy for those who react strongly to mosquito bites.  If the site of the bite gets swollen, red and hot then this is a good remedy to try.

Hives: I’ve seen this remedy work incredibly well with hives.  Generally hives are red, swollen and hot, which makes them a perfect indicator for Apis.  The hives may also feel better with a cold compress.

Allergies: This can also be a good remedy for some seasonal allergies.  Seasonal allergies needing Apis will most always  involve swollen, red eyes that may burn.

Urinary Tract Infections/Cystitis: This is one of the remedies to consider for a UTI.  This remedy is indicated if there is scalding pain during urination.  Urging to urinate will be frequent but little or no urine will pass.

Eczema: If the eczema has marked swelling and redness and feels better with a cold application then this is a remedy to consider.

Headache: This remedy will be indicated for a headache if the pain goes from behind the left ear to behind the left eye or temple.  The pain will be worse from heat and better when you go outside into the open air.  It may also feel better with a cold application.

Shingles: This remedy can give relief to shingles if the shingles are hot and red with stinging/burning pain.  Generally I don’t recommend topical creams but I have seen success using the Homeopathic remedy, Rhus Tox with a topical application of Apis in quite a few cases of shingles.
