Ah, it’s that time of the year again, the stomach “flu” is going around. Homeopathy works quickly and effectively when it comes to the vomiting and/or diarrhea associated with this illness. Listed below are some of the more commonly used remedies.
Arsenicum Album: This remedy is indicated when there are burning pains in the stomach. The pains may feel better when drinking milk. One is usually thirsty but only for small sips of water at frequent intervals. Cold food is vomited immediately after eating. If diarrhea is present it is generally watery and very acrid.
Bismuth: This remedy includes severe abdominal pains, which may be burning in nature. There is a great thirst for water but the water is vomited up as soon as it reaches the stomach. Liquids are vomited up almost immediately but small amounts of food may be retained longer. If diarrhea is present it is generally very profuse. Children presenting with the above may also not want to be left alone, as they will want constant company.
Bryonia: This remedy is indicated when nausea and vomiting come on from eating or drinking anything at all. Vomiting will also be brought on by the slightest movement. One just wants to lie down and stay as motionless as possible. Vomiting may be better if warm drinks are consumed instead of cold.
Chelidonium: This remedy is warranted if everything is vomited back up except for warm drinks. Pain will extend across the abdomen and may feel better when one lies down on their left side with legs drawn up in the fetal position.
Ipecacuanha: This remedy will present with constant nausea that is unrelieved by vomiting. A loathing of food will be present. The smell of food makes the nausea worse.
Iris: This remedy is indicated when there is a headache accompanying the vomiting. There may be an internal burning all the way through the digestive tract, from the mouth to the stomach and through the anus. If diarrhea is present it will burn. There will be recurring episodes of cramping and vomiting.
Nux Vomica: This remedy includes nausea and vomiting that become worse with anger or are accompanied by great anger. Stomach pain feels better with warmth, such as a warm compress. Warm drinks may also sooth the pain.
Sanicula: This remedy is indicated when projectile vomiting is present. One may be thirsty for small sips of water. Food is vomited back up immediately after eating.
Veratrum Album: This remedy is indicated when vomiting and diarrhea are occurring at the same time. Vomiting may be projectile. This remedy also presents with a GREAT thirst for cold drinks/water. In addition, one may feel chilled to the bone and cannot get warm enough.
It is important to drink as much liquid as you can during a bout of the stomach flu, as dehydration may ensue. If vomiting and/or diarrhea persists for longer than 48 hours see your Physician or contact a Professional Homeopath.
